American Spirit Cigarettes
Natural American Spirits are a newer cigarette brand. They were introduced in 1982 and are manufactured by the Santa Fe Natural Tobacco Company. The company was founded by Bill Drake, an author, Robert Marion, an acupuncturist and Eb Wicks, a plumber. They sought to create a company that embodied their passion for natural tobacco.
The Santa Fe Natural Tobacco Company was acquired by Reynolds American in 2002. Reynolds American is the second-largest tobacco company in the United States. They also own Camel, Pall Mall, Kool and several other major cigarette brands. Even though American Spirits are now owned by Reynolds, they still operate as an independent company and are still produced by Santa Fe Tobacco in New Mexico.
American Spirits use natural, additive-free, whole leaf tobacco. They are very proud of their growing methods and high tobacco quality. The farms use sustainable and earth-friendly practices. Due to their use of natural, additive-free tobaccos, the cigarettes are free of the more harmful chemicals often found in cigarettes. The company does not test on animals nor do they fund smoking tests performed on animals.
American Spirits uses color-coded boxes and filters to denote tar and nicotine levels. The bright packaging was an instant success and smokers enjoyed trying new color options. In actuality, all the cigarette varieties contain the same tobacco and therefore the same tar and nicotine content. It is the paper and filters used for each color that alters the amount of tar and nicotine delivered to the smoker.
American Spirits started out producing only loose tobacco. Their first cigarette was the American Spirit Blue, launched in 1985. It is still the most popular product for the company. American Spirit cigarettes are extremely long-burning. Many who switch from other brands remark on the quality and quantity of tobacco in each cigarette. For those wanting a pure roll-your-own style cigarette, American Spirits are the real deal. This company strives to honor the genuine tobacco heritage and flavor profile.
